An Attempt at Meeting

Adeeb Kamal Ad-Deen

(1)

At the market of your nakedness

I spent all that I had

Without seeing a thing.

(2)

After loving you… then everything was over

After hating me … then everything was over

My love met your hate

They exchanged stabs to the death.

(3)

If my dot entered your crescent

Another sun would rise

And end up the night’s legendary darkness.

(4)

If my dot entered your crescent

I would get back my robbed childhood

From the marketplace of robbers and usurers .

(5)

If my dot entered your crescent

A red apple tree would grow in my heart.

(6)

If my dot entered….

My heart would refrain from weeping at the hands of the boat

And my memory from waiting for the lost crow and dove.

(7)

Your body is a repast

But not for a man like me

It is for upright beasts.

(8)

Once I entered the plain of your love

The mountain of your haughtiness began to appear

to me; I who have nothing save two bleeding hands to climb with.

(9)

If my dot entered your crescent

I would discover a new alphabet

That begins with nuun* and ends at her dot

As does the miser at the purse of his liras every night.

(10)

If my dot entered ..

My heart would stop firing bullets

At the characters!

(11)

If my dot entered …

I would turn into a shepherd of the plaits of your pretty lies.

(12)

If my dot entered your crescent

I would be able to catch the clouds

And then to send them wherever I will

But you would be able to catch the clouds

And to paste them on your breasts and legs

And to make of what is left a dish of kisses!
